From 1970 to 1974, he attended Princeton University as a doctoral student, and was the assistant editor of the Papers of Woodrow Wilson during that time. He earned his Ph.D. in 1974, and returned to Princeton Seminary as Assistant Professor of American Church History. He served as assistant editor of Theology Today from 1969 to 1977.
