The Reverend Doctor William Swan Plumer Bryan (1856- 1925) was a grandson of the renowned Southern Presbyterian theologian, William Swan Plumer (PTS class of 1827). He was educated at Davidson College and Columbia Theological Seminary, and also received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Centre College in Kentucky. He served as a Presbyterian pastor for many years.
Scope and Content
This collection consists of eight typescript sermons given by Dr. Bryan during his pastorate in Chicago. These sermons were delivered shortly before his death in May of 1925.
It is not currently known how these items were acquired by the Seminary. They may have been given by Dr. Bryan's son, the Reverend Alison R. Bryan (1891 - 1992), who visited the Seminary Archives several times in 1991. These documents were organized as a manuscript collection in December of 1996.
There are no special restrictions to access of this collection. It may be examined by library patrons under the normal rules and conditions of Special Collections.
