Biographical Information

Dr. Harry Andrew Rhodes (1875-1965) was born and raised in Pennsylvania. He attended Grove City College in Grove City, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1903. Dr. Rhodes continued his studies at the Princeton Theological Seminary and Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey from 1903-1906 graduating with a B.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary and a M.A. from Princeton University. He attended Western Theological Seminary in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania for one year (1904-1905) during his studies.

After graduating from the Princeton Theological Seminary in 1906, Dr. Rhodes served as minister of the Cross Creek Presbyterian Church in Washington County, Pennsylvania. In 1908 Dr. Rhodes was assigned to the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. missionary to Korea. He remained with the missionary to Korea until his retirement in 1946. Dr. Rhodes did evangelistic work in Kangkei, Pyengyang and Syenchun, North Korea from 1908 to 1918. From 1918 to 1932 Dr. Rhodes was a Professor of Bible and Director of Religious Activities at the Chosen Christian College, Seoul, Korea. From 1933-1940, Dr. Rhodes was assigned to evangelistic, literary and administrative work in Seoul, Korea. During this time he was Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Korea Mission (1937-1939), Editor of the Korea Mission Field (English) of the Federal Council of Missions and of the Christian Messenger (Korean) of the National Christian Council.

After retiring from missionary service in Korea, Dr. Rhodes continued as an interim supply minister from 1942 to 1951 in Romulus and Canoga, New York; Smyrna Beach, Florida; Pismo Beach, California,Wildwood, New Jersey; and Ravenwood, West Virginia. In 1951 he moved permanently to California where he later served as Minister of Missions in the Community Presbyterian Church of San Marino, California until 1965.

Dr. Rhodes wrote the History of the Korea Mission, Volumes I and II. He also wrote books in Korean: Travels in the Bible Lands and A Brief History of Christianity in Korea.


Scope and Content

The Harry A. Rhodes collection contains his dairies, journals, itineraries, correspondence, mission reports, and sermons from 1898 to 1965. The journals and diaries contain memories, itineraries and records of place, sermon and attendance. The collection has an autobiographical outline of Dr. Rhodes. The collection also includes clippings, photos and photo albums.

The Harry A. Rhodes Collection was donated by his children, Helen Frances Rhodes Scott, Howard Banks Rhodes and Paul Brown Rhodes. The materials were sent to the Princeton Theological Seminary Library by Paul B. Rhodes, April 12, 1988.
