Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887) was one of the most prominent and influential American preachers of his day. He was the son of Lyman Beecher and the brother of the many successful Beecher children, including Harriet Beecher Stowe. Henry Ward Beecher graduated from Lane Theological Seminary in 1837 and became the pastor of the Plymouth Church (Congregational) in Brooklyn in 1847. He was most famous for his opposition to slavery and his skills as a preacher and public lecturer who championed the love of God rather than the wrath of God. He also supported women's suffrage and Darwin's theory of evolution.
