Biographical Information

Dr. Campbell was a pastor, professor, preacher, author, and civil rights activist. As minister at The Riverside Church, he advocated for the Civil Rights Movement, the need to end the Vietnam War, confronting homophobia, and the Watergate scandal. He has been a visiting lecturer at Fuller Theological Seminary and the Claremont School of Theology in California as well as at Princeton and Pittsburgh Theological Seminaries. For twenty-five years Dr. Campbell authored a quarterly for preachers entitled Campbell's Notebook. As a minister at-large based in New York City, he wrote, preached, lectured, and conducted retreats and workshops for ministers in Homiletics.

Scope and Content

This collection consists of personal scrapbook materials from the ministry of Dr. Ernest T. Campbell, numerous reprinted and recorded sermons and writings, correspondence and subject files. The sermons range from September 1968 to July 1975. Most sermons were written and preached by Dr. Campbell. The collection also includes sermons preached by Dr. Eugene Laubach, Dr. Sherman Skinner, David H.C. Read, Harold A. Bosley, Dr. Carlyle Marney, and Reverend Evelyn Newman, Rev. Robert L. Polk, Dr. Howard Shomer and Rev. Edwin Muller.

Boxes 1-5 of this collection were given to the seminary libraries by Dr. Ernest T. Campbell in November 2009. The collection was arranged and the finding aid written by Kristen Nivling in May 2010. Boxes 6-23 were given to the seminary libraries by Mrs. Joan Campbell in August, 2012, and were arranged by Robert Golon.

Boxes 1-5 contain sermons accessioned from Dr. Campbell in 2009. The sermons are arranged in order by date, beginning with September 29, 1968 and ending with July 20, 1975. Boxes 6-23 contain materials accessioned from Mrs. Joan Campbell in 2012. Boxes 6-8 contain personal scrapbook files. Boxes 8-9 contain correspondence and subject files. Printed sermons, sorted alphabetically, are in boxes 10 through 14. Boxes 15-18 contain published and unpublished writings by Dr. Campbell. Audiocassette recordings of Dr. Campbell’s sermons are contained in boxes 19-20. Photographs, loose books, and ephemera are in boxes 21-23.
