Biographical Information

Rev. Dr. Richard C. Halverson (1916-1995) was the chaplain of the United States Senate from 1981 to 1995. Dr. Halverson received a Bachelor of Science degree from Wheaton College in 1939, a Bachelor of Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1942, and several honorary Doctoral degrees in the course of his career. Dr. Halverson began his ordained ministry in California, where he served as Managing Director at Forest Home Christian Conference Grounds and as a minister at various churches including First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood (1947-1956).

Dr. Halverson became an associate of the International Prayer Breakfast Movement in Washington, D.C. in 1956. He was the senior pastor of Fourth Presbyterian Church in Bethesda, Maryland from December 1958 until May 1981. He began his role as Senate Chaplain in February 1981 and served there until his retirement in March of 1995.

In addition to his pastoral roles, Halverson was the Chairman of the Board of World Vision (1966-1983) and a member of the advisory board to many more organizations. He was heavily involved in the International Prayer Breakfast Movement, also known as the "Fellowship Foundation." He also published several books and a biweekly devotional newsletter he began in 1949 called Perspective.

Scope and Content

This collection consists of 11 series. It includes correspondence, topical files, and daily senate prayers from Dr. Halverson's tenure as U.S. Senate Chaplain. It also contains his correspondence from this period (1981-1990s) regarding organizations he helped to lead. These include World Vision, the International Prayer Breakfast Movement and many others. Some of the topical files in this collection date from before 1981. His sermons, manuscripts, and personal correspondence also range in date from his ministry in California (1947) to his retirement (1995).

This collection was donated to the Seminary Libraries by Dr. Halverson's son Richard Christian Halverson, Jr. in 1999. A preliminary inventory was drafted by Special Collections staff in 2003. The collection was processed and the finding aid was written by Kristen Nivling under the direction of Sarah Seraphin, Manuscript Librarian, from March 2008 through April 2010. The original order of these files has been maintained. The finding aid was edited by Sarah Seraphin in April of 2010.

Arrangement

Series 1: People, Organizations, Topics (Boxes 1-13)

This series includes correspondence, clippings and other general information on various people, organizations, and topics. They are arranged by date and subdivided alphabetically.

Series 2: Correspondence (Boxes 14-30)

These correspondence files are arranged by date and subdivided alphabetically. They include correspondence to a variety of individuals and groups.

Series 3: Personal Writings (Boxes 31-40)

This series contains drafts and typescripts of personal writings, including articles, sermons, addresses, books, and interviews. It includes Senate prayers and many outlines and drafts of sermons ranging from 1958 to 1984.

Series 4: Fellowship Files (Boxes 41-46)

This series includes files on the Prison Fellowship Ministries, the National Prayer Breakfast, and Fellowship Foundation files.

Series 5: Legal Decisions (Box 47)

This series includes files regarding legal matters, including a 1979 Massachusetts suit involving chaplains in the state legislature, House Resolution 413 and the 1980 Madalyn

O'Hair suit, as well as the 1987 Kurtz v. Baker case.

Series 6: Social Files (Boxes 48-52)

This series is comprised of social correspondence, including invitations to meetings and social events from church leaders and politicians throughout the US and abroad.

Series 7: Prayers (Boxes 53-57)

This series includes files on the National Day of Prayer including legal documents, articles, brochures, and other printed material about the event. It also includes letters from church officials, National Thanksgiving Commission material, material on various prayer rallies, and preaching resources. It includes pre-publication or manuscript drafts of Dr. Halverson's published works: No Greater Power, We the People, and Somehow Inside of Eternity.

Series 8: Perspective Files (Boxes 58-60)

This series includes copies of the printed publication Perspective: A Bi-Weekly Devotional Letter, published by Concern Ministries, Inc., of McLean, Virginia. It also includes background files, manuscripts, correspondence with contributors, and correspondence from readers.

Series 9: Senatorial Correspondence (Boxes 61-65)

This series is comprised of senatorial correspondence, including informal notes from various senators. It also includes files on weekly prayer schedules for senators and their wives, several folders on columnist Mike Royko's 1982 column criticizing the office of Senate Chaplain, along with letters of support for Dr. Halverson from members of Congress. This series includes a file on the prayer service after the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan.

Series 10: World Vision Files (Boxes 66-68)

This series includes files on the charitable organization World Vision. Dr. Halverson was the Chairman of the Board of World Vision from 1966 to 1983.

Series 11: Other Individual Topics (Boxes 69-70)

This series includes files on various churches as well as files related to events in Washington DC in the late 1980s.
